What is PBIS?

PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. PBIS is a proactive approach to establishing behavioral supports and social culture and has a clear framework that can transform student behavior and culture within the school and class room.

PBIS is a three-tiered framework that supports students in multiple ways. When implemented effectively, students experience greater academic success and positive behavior. Each of the three tiers reflects a particular system of support that improves student outcomes.

How does it work?

The core of PBIS is designed to teach, model, and reinforce expected behavior to maintain a productive learning environment that has minimal inappropriate behavior.

What does PBIS mean in school?

The goal of PBIS in schools is to be proactive and address all student behavior and encourage all students to make positive choices. This will ensure that students are successfully meeting behavior expectations and growing academically.

1. School-Wide and Classroom Expectations

Consistent and clear expectations are taught to students and reinforced daily by all adults in the building. When working as a team to encourage positive behavior, students are more likely to respond in a positive way.

2. Rewards/Incentives

Rewards and incentives are an important part of PBIS implementation for acknowledging students positively for doing appropriate behaviors. In addition to offering specific praise when students do what's expected we also incentivize students with small rewards for demonstrating appropriate behavior.

3. Collecting and Evaluating Data

Specific data is collected centered around students' behavior, achievements, and the school-wide implementation plan. This greatly benefits students and teachers by allowing educators to actively reflect, evaluate, and refine PBIS practices.
